Brennan Ali’s Draft Analysis

The NHL Draft is always an interesting event, and this year was no different. With the first overall pick, the Detroit Red Wings selected Jack Devine, a defenseman from the University of Notre Dame. Devine is a big body at 6’4″, and he uses his size to his advantage in both ends of the ice. He’s a good skater for his size, and he has good vision and hockey sense. Devine should be able to step into the NHL right away and make an impact.

With their second pick in the first round, the Red Wings chose Brennan Ali, a defenseman from Notre Dame. Ali is another big body at 6’5″, but he’s more of a stay-at-home type defender. He’s not as offensively gifted as Devine, but he’s a solid defensive player who can play physical when needed. Ali will need some time to develop his game before he’s ready for the NHL, but he has the potential to be a solid player at both ends of the ice.

Reese Laubach was taken in the second round by Detroit, and he’s yet another defenseman with size (6’3″). Laubach is more of an offensive player than either Devine or Ali, as he racked up 33 points in 40 games for Notre Dame last season. He needs to work on his defensive game, but if he can do that then he has the potential to be a top-four defenseman in the NHL someday.
