The black NHL players from Europe.
With the NHL season underway, fans are once again debating which team will take home the Stanley Cup. But for some, the focus isn’t on the game, but on the players – specifically, the black NHL players from Europe.
According to a 2016 report by The Huffington Post, there are currently 42 black players in the NHL, representing just over 10 percent of the league. Of those 42 players, 20 are from Canada, while seven are from the United States. The remaining 15 hail from seven different European countries: Czech Republic (2), Denmark (1), Finland (3), Germany (2), Russia (1), Slovakia (2) and Sweden (4).
With the exception of Canada and the U.S., no other country has more than two black players in the NHL. But while Europe may not be as diverse as North America when it comes to hockey players, it’s worth noting that the number of black NHL players from Europe has doubled in just four years.
In 2012, there were just seven black players from Europe in the NHL. That number increased to 14 in 2014 and then jumped to 28 in 2016. This trend appears to be continuing, as there are currently 32 black players from European countries playing in the NHL.
So why is this happening? It’s hard to say for sure, but one theory is that more black kids in Europe are starting to play hockey at a young age. According to a 2017 report by The Undefeated, “The number of African descent hockey players has been growing steadily in Sweden since 2002-03… In 2015-16, 1 percent of all Swedish Hockey League players were African descent, up from 0 percent in 2002-03.”
While 32 black NHL players may not seem like a lot, it’s still a significant increase from just a few years ago. And if current trends continue, we could see even more black players from Europe making an impact in the NHL in the years to come.
The black NHL players from other countries.
There are several black NHL players from other countries. P.K. Subban, who is black, was born in Canada to Jamaican parents. Jarome Iginla, another black NHL player, was born in Alberta, Canada to a Nigerian father and a Canadian mother of European descent. Mike Grier, yet another black NHL player, was born in Boston, Massachusetts to an African American father and an Irish American mother.
