What Happens to Undrafted Players in the NHL Draft?
The NHL Draft is a process whereby young hockey players are selected by NHL teams. It is held annually, typically in late June or early July. The draft order is determined by the previous season’s standings, with non-playoff teams having the highest draft picks.
Players who are eligible for the draft are typically between the ages of 18 and 20, although some players may be older. Once drafted, players must report to their NHL team’s training camp in order to try and earn a spot on the roster.
Players who are not drafted during the NHL Draft still have options available to them. They can sign with any NHL team as an unrestricted free agent, or they can choose to play in junior hockey leagues or college hockey in order to develop their skills further and potentially be drafted in future years.
What is the NHL Draft Lottery?
The Stanley Cup playoffs are in full swing and the race for the Stanley Cup is heating up. But for teams that didn’t make the playoffs, or were eliminated early, their focus has shifted to the NHL Draft. The NHL Draft Lottery will take place on Tuesday, April 30th and will be broadcast live on NBCSN.
What is the NHL Entry Draft?
The NHL Entry Draft is an annual event in which every franchise in the National Hockey League (NHL) systematically selects the rights to unsigned players who are eligible to be professional hockey players in the NHL. Simply put, it is a way for NHL teams to stock their rosters with young talent.
What is the Difference Between the NHL Draft and the NHL Entry Draft?
The NHL Entry Draft is an annual event in which each of the 30 teams in the National Hockey League select young amateur players (aged 18–20) who have never played in the NHL before.
The draft order is decided based on the reverse order of finish for the previous season. For example, the team that wins the Stanley Cup will draft last, while the team that finished last in the standings will draft first.
The NHL Draft is different from the NHL Entry Draft in that it is only open to players who are 23 years old or younger as of September 15th of the year in which they are drafted.
So, for example, if a player turned 24 on September 16th, 2020, they would not be eligible for selection in the 2021 NHL Draft, but would instead have to enter into the NHL Entry Draft pool.
