The National Hockey League was founded on November 26, 1917, with the temporary suspension of operations of its predecessor organization, the National Hockey Association (NHA), which had been founded in 1909. The NHA’s owners decided that year that they could no longer afford to operate the league under the previous financial structure, and they took steps to disband it. However, they were unable to find a suitable buyer for the NHA’s Toronto Blueshirts hockey club—the only asset left from their efforts to unravel the NHA—and as a result, they decided to continue operating under a new league structure.

The NHL has its roots in two earlier professional ice hockey organizations: the National Hockey Association (NHA), which was founded in 1909, and the Dominion Hockey League (DHL), which was established in 1911. The DHL folded after only one season, but the NHA lasted for several years before it was also disbanded. In its place, a new organization called the National Hockey League was formed. The first NHL season took place in 1917-18, and featured four teams: the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, and Quebec Bulldogs.

The NHL initially consisted of just four teams, all based in Canada: the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, and Toronto Arenas. The league expanded to the United States in 1924 with the addition of the Boston Bruins, and then doubled in size again in 1926–27 with the arrival of the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Pirates (now the Pittsburgh Penguins), and Detroit Cougars (later renamed the Detroit Red Wings).

The league expanded to the United States in 1924, when the Boston Bruins and the New York Americans joined, and then to ten teams by 1926.

The National Hockey League (NHL) was founded on November 26, 1917, with the endorsement of then-President of the United States Woodrow Wilson, when several team owners came together and formed the hockey league. The NHL was originally composed of just five teams: the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Arenas, and the Boston Bruins. By 1942-43, there were only six teams remaining in the league: the Canadiens, Bruins, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Rangers, and the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The league began to rapidly expand in 1967 when six more teams were added as part of the Original Six expansion. These teams were: the Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota North Stars (now the Dallas Stars), Philadelphia Flyers, Pittsburgh Penguins, St. Louis Blues, and
the Vancouver Canucks. The NHL then added additional rounds of expansion in 1974 and 1979 which brought the total number of teams up to 21 by 1980.

The late 1990s and early 2000s saw another period of major expansion for the NHL. In 1998-99, the Nashville Predators and Atlanta Thrashers joined the league as part of a wave of new teams that also included:
the Columbus Blue Jackets and Minnesota Wild (both joining in 2000-01),
the Dallas Stars (who moved from Minnesota),
the Anaheim Ducks and Tampa Bay Lightning (both joining in 1993-94). As a result of all this expansion, by 2000-2001 season there were a total of 31 NHL teams.

The league’s smallest market is Winnipeg, Manitoba, while its largest is New York City.

The National Hockey League was established on November 26, 1917, at a meeting between governors of the three major professional hockey leagues at that time:the National Hockey Association (NHA), which was founded in 1909 as a successor to two earlier leagues, the Canadian Hockey Association (CHA) and the Eastern Canada Amateur Hockey Association (ECAHA); andthe International Professional Hockey League (IPHL), founded in 1904 with five teams from Ontario and Quebec. At that time, there were three major professional hockey leagues operating independently of each other in North America: each had legal gambling on games under contract with their respective clubs.

The NHL is divided into two conferences, the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference, each of which is further divided into three divisions.
