The National Hockey League (NHL) is a professional ice hockey league made up of 30 teams from Canada and the United States. Founded in 1917, the NHL is the oldest professional hockey league in the world.
The NHL’s official history begins with the founding of two rival organizations, the National Hockey Association (NHA) and the Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA), in 1910. These two leagues would eventually merge to form the NHL in 1917.
During its early years, the NHL faced several challenges, including a war-time shortage of players and financial difficulties. However, the league persevered and eventually became a major force in both North American hockey and professional sport.
The First NHL Season
The first NHL season took place in 1917-18. The league was founded on November 26, 1917, when the NHL’s predecessor, the National Hockey Association (NHA), ceased operations due to a legal dispute with its owners. After a few months of inactivity, a new hockey league was founded: the NHL. The first season of play consisted of seven teams: the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Arenas, and the expansion clubs Quebec Bulldogs and Hamilton Tigers.

The first ever winner of the Stanley Cup was the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association (AAA) hockey team in 1893.
The Stanley Cup has changed hands many times over the years, and it has been won by some of the most iconic teams in NHL history. The Montreal Canadiens have won it a record 24 times, followed by the Toronto Maple Leafs with 13 victories.
