NHL history
Founded in 1917, the National Hockey League is the premier professional ice hockey league in North America. Comprising 31 teams from the United States and Canada, the NHL is considered to be the premier professional ice hockey league in the world. Each season, teams compete for the Stanley Cup, which is awarded to the team that finishes with the best regular season record.
The National Hockey League was founded on November 26, 1917, with the temporary suspension of operations of its predecessor organization, the National Hockey Association (NHA), following a legal dispute between owner Eddie Livingstone and the other owners of NHA clubs. The NHL’s first president was Frank Calder, who helped grow the league from four to seven teams during his tenure from 1918 to 1943. The NHL’s first expansion team was added in 1924 with the addition of the Montreal Maroons; nine years later, in 1933, a second expansion saw the addition of the Chicago Black Hawks, Detroit Red Wings, and New York Rangers.
NHL rules
The National Hockey League (NHL) is a professional ice hockey league composed of 30 member teams: 23 in the United States and 7 in Canada. Headquartered in New York City, the NHL is considered to be the premier professional ice hockey league in the world, and one of the North American major professional sports leagues. The Stanley Cup, which is awarded to the league playoff champion at the end of each season, is commonly referred to as the “championship trophy of the NHL”.
NHL rules thoroughly cover all aspects of the game, including equipment, goaltender’s equipment, other on-ice officials, and player conduct.

NHL Stanley Cup
The National Hockey League’s Stanley Cup is the championship trophy awarded annually to the NHL playoff winner.
First presented in 1893, the Stanley Cup is named after Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor General of Canada who donated it as an award to Canadian amateur hockey champions. The Cup was originally intended to be a Challenge Trophy for Canada’s best amateur hockey club, but it quickly became the de facto professional championship trophy of the NHL.
A professional hockey league did not start in Canada until 1910, and the Stanley Cup was not contested by professional teams until 1926. It was established as the de facto championship trophy of the NHL in 1947, when the NHL and its predecessor organizations—the National Hockey Association (NHA) and Pacific Coast Hockey Association (PCHA)—merged into one league.
The Stanley Cup has been awarded to 24 different teams since 1893, and has been won by 13 different teams since 1926. Of those 24 champions, only six have repeated as winners:
the Montreal Canadiens (who have won it a record 24 times),
the Toronto Maple Leafs (13),
the Detroit Red Wings (11),
the Boston Bruins (6),
the New York Islanders (4), and
the Edmonton Oilers (4).
